Vision
Inspired by Mediterranean-style design and the Japanese Wabi Sabi philosophy, our vision at Quinta Falcoes do Sol blends natural materials with the beauty of imperfection. Our finishes and decor feature wood, rattan, ceramics, terra-cotta, wrought iron, and linen, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Unlike modern design principles that emphasize perfection, Wabi Sabi celebrates the beauty found in imperfections. Cracks, chips, and weathering are seen as marks of character and history, adding warmth and approachability to our interiors. These elements make our spaces feel lived-in and comfortable.
Our greatest inspiration is the island of Madeira itself. Our concept was born from the desire to share the island’s unique offerings: the rich history of wine, old stone farmhouses, living fruit forests, and stunning views. We honor the past and the people who came before us, those who lived in these houses and farmed this land. We appreciate how the old houses were built in harmony with the landscape, using materials found on the land. Stones cleared for crops were repurposed for houses, walls, and paths, creating a seamless integration with the environment.
At Quinta Falcões do Sol, we strive to respect this heritage while providing a comfortable and authentic experience for our guests.
How it all began
The story of Quinta Falcões Do Sol begins with two wheels and a love for travel.
I have been working in construction and residential remodelling for the last 20 years in San Francisco. In 2017 I did a motorcycle adventure through Southern Europe and Northern Africa. It began in Lisbon Portugal, and a chance meeting with a lovely couple in a Fado bar convinced me to change my original course, sending me north to Sintra where I was smitten with the fogged land dotted with ancient quintas and with wild gardens.
After three months on the road in Marocco and Spain I returned to Sintra and spend the final days of my trip there. This time coincidence led me to a beautifully restored estate now operating as a bed and breakfast. The owners had recently embarked on their dream of restoration and rebirth. The conversations by the fire and their encouragement to pursue what truly mattered left a deep impression. They told me how they sold their house in Paris and bought a run down mansion with the dream to fix it up.
Returning to California the wheels never stopped spinning. The desire to create something lasting, something that merged my skills in building with a simpler, more fulfilling way of life, was overwhelming. I resolved to leave all my belongings, my profession as a builder and all my friends and loved ones with only one bag to return to Portugal to find a property that I could transform into a living version of my dream. My path led to Madeira.
After three months, I had seen around 300 different properties of the island. It makes me laugh, but it was exactly during this time that I had a vivid dream of a tiki bar. That very same week a realtor asked to meet nearby what was, well, a local tiki bar. That same bar became a regular stop for me, and it was my relationship with the owners there that eventually led me to find a local man that shortly became a good friend and would bring me to what would become the Quinta Falcões Do Sol.
Once finding the spot that I had visioned, I quickly realized it was going to take a lot more work than I could have ever imagined. The place was overgrown and the buildings still standing were ruins. For 3 years I was restoring the houses, clearing the land, working together with great people who were eager to make the vision come to life. It was in these 3 years where I also met my partner to share my vision and life with.
Today, when we welcome our guests from all over the world at this very special place to enjoy the island and see how they appreciate all the work and love that went into making this place into what it is, I know that every sacrifice and every challenge, was worth it. Quinta Falcões Do Sol is not just a destination, it is a testament to following a dream, changing your plans, a place where guests can feel the passion and dedication embedded in every stone, every tree we planted and every breathtaking view.
